ESTERO

Estero is a medium-sized coastal town (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of Florida. With a population of 22,612 people and six constituent neighborhoods, Estero is the 117th largest community in Florida.

There’s nothing like the smell of a brand new house, and in Estero, you’ll find that a large proportion of houses were recently built. New growth in residential real estate is an indication that people are choosing to move to Estero, and putting down their money on brand new construction. Estero’s real estate is, on average, some of the newest in the nation. Estero does seem to be experiencing an influx of affluent people, because the median household income is $68,218.

Housing costs in Estero are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don’t compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in Florida.

Estero is a decidedly white-collar town, with fully 89.77% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Estero is a town of sales and office workers, professionals and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Estero who work in sales jobs (21.04%), management occupations (13.44%) and food service (7.57%).

One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 12.60% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Another notable thing is that Estero is an extremely popular destination for tourists and seasonal residents. So much of the population is seasonal such that the town’s population swells significantly during the vacation season, and drops again when the season ends. Because of this, much of the local economy is centered around tourism; some businesses may be operated only during the high season. During the low season, year-round residents will notice that the city is a substantially quieter place to live.

A large number of seniors call Estero home: people 65 and over are 42.04% of the population. Because of the prominence of the retirement community, this is good place for the over-65 crowd to settle, as many of the town’s services and social community are geared to this demographic.

Because of many things, Estero is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live here, making Estero a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The town’s good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, Estero has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Finally, Estero’s overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.

One of the nice things about Estero is that it is nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.

Estero Information and Demographics

The education level of Estero ranks among the highest in the nation. Of the 25-and-older adult population in Estero, 42.22% have at least a bachelor’s degree. The typical US community has just 21.84% of its adults holding a bachelor’s degree or graduate degree.

The per capita income in Estero in 2010 was $46,218, which is wealthy relative to Florida and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $184,872 for a family of four. However, Estero contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

The people who call Estero home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Estero residents report their race to be White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Estero include German, English, Irish, Italian, Polish and French.

The most common language spoken in Estero is English. Some people also speak Spanish.
